Week 4: Committing to a Specific Goal
We live in a world with many distractions. It’s easy to get lost in a whirlwind of competing thoughts, interests, ideas and even goals. Making a big, amazing, long-term goal happen is never easy — but it’s always a worthwhile pursuit. So, what’s the trick to truly committing to a specific goal and making it happen? Commit to tasks.
Big and small goals can always be broken down into small tasks. Tasks are simply small chunks of work. When you commit to a task, making your goal become a reality becomes an easier process. You know what you need to do to make your goal happen — now, you simply have to do the work and complete the tasks to make it happen. So…if you want to commit to a big goal — commit to the tasks it takes to get there.
Here are some things to remember when you’re doing the tasks for your goal:
- Goals can be anything ranging from a financial goal, to a career goal, to a relationship or spiritual goal. Having goals in different areas of your life is important.
- To make a goal actually happen, we have to focus on tasks — and those tasks require us to do the work.
- Discomfort is temporary: Sometimes doing the tasks you need to do for your goals feels exhausting and uncomfortable — but remember — feelings of discomfort are temporary. In fact, good long-term things require short-term discomforts.
- You won’t regret accomplishing a great goal. Accomplishing a goal that is big, important and long-term gives our lives a lot of meaning and allows us to feel high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence.
